It’s normal to feel a bit unsure before your first breathwork session.
But the truth is, you really can’t do it wrong.
Think about it, you are in a safe space, with a trained breathwork facilitator, that has gone through a series of questions about you personally and physically, has enquired about what you want from the session and has experience with a wide range of breathers first hand.
If you are working with a certified breathwork facilitator, they have had to go through some pretty intense training that covers everything from the theory of breathwork right through to running live online and in person sessions, whilst also understanding how to deal with things, if they went wrong…Which they won’t!
But I do get that for some people, stepping into the unknown can be both exciting and unsettling at the same time.
So if you are experiencing breathwork for the very first time, here’s a few hints and tips that will help you make the most of the experience.
- Arrive open and ready to receive.
- Wear comfy clothes. Think yoga gear or pyjamas. Comfort helps the body let go.
- Avoid a heavy meal beforehand. Eat something light about 1 hour before to stay present in your body.
- Come with curiosity, not pressure. You don’t need to “achieve” anything. Just breathe.
- Bring water and a journal. You might want to capture insights afterwards.
- Let the emotions come. Tears, laughter, body movements, remember it’s all welcome.
- Try not to force anything.
- Don’t judge your experience or compare it to others.
At the end of the day, if nothing happens, then just think, you’ve taken some nice relaxing time for yourself, which is not a bad thing really!
