Why we store emotions in the body and how the breath sets them free

Have you ever felt tears rising during a massage, or anxiety out of nowhere when lying still?

That’s your body remembering.

We don’t just think about our feelings, we actually store them.

When an emotion isn’t fully felt (because it was too much at the time), it gets filed away in the body’s tissues and nervous system.

Think of the term “Suppressing our feelings” or “Bottling them up…”

Over time, these become layers of unprocessed energy, tension, fatigue, even disconnection with ourselves and those around us.

But, here’s the magic.

The breath can unlock those layers. Without reliving every detail or forcing anything. Just through rhythm, presence, and trust.

Breathwork invites your body to soften. And when it feels safe enough, your body begins to let go.

What release might look like:

  • A shaking arm
  • A deep cry
  • A wave of peace
  • An old memory surfacing and then dissolving
  • Feelings of hot and cold

You don’t have to carry all of it anymore. The breath knows how to guide the release.

All you need to do is show up and breathe.
